Governors

A school’s governing body works with the senior management of the school to help them produce the best possible education for their pupils.

Who makes up the governing body?

At Collis our governing body consists of 18 members; they are appointed for 4 years, after which time, their position is up for re-election.

Parent governors: Any parent of a child registered at Collis School may run for election, make nominations and vote.

In addition all members of staff have the same opportunity to stand for/nominate and vote for staff governors.

Other members are either form the Local Authority (LEA governors) or are Community governors – members of the local community who have a interest in the school.

What do the governors do?

Governors act as a critical friend to the head teacher and school:

  • They support and challenge the head teacher
  • They ensure that the school is accountable to the children and parents it serves, to its local community, and to those who fund and maintain it, as well as the staff it employs.
  • Governors monitor the school’s performance – gathering evidence to show what progress is being made towards strategic priorities, targets and implementation of policies
  • They work in close partnership with the head and take advise from the head before making decisions
  • They must also be prepared to account for the school’s overall performance and to explain the governing body’s decision and actions to anyone who has a legitimate interest.
  • And ensure that statutory requirements are met
  • Governors must respect professional roles & management responsibilities of head and staff.
  • Governors are not involved in detail of day-to-day management of the school – that is for headteacher.
