It all started with a simple poetry competition. 12 amazing poets took part. Sadly Miss Bray could only take 6 children! The 6 lucky children were very excited. The other children were very disappointed with their loss. However, a few days later Miss Bray called the unfortunate ones to her classroom to present them with some great new! When they arrived they were delighted to hear that a school couldn’t go and they could go! So on 18^th January those 12 children, who were accompanied by Miss Bray and Mrs Fursden, leapt on the Collis minibus and away they went to go and meet Michael Rosen. On the way there, the minibus was full of excitement. No one could stop talking. Everyone was so excited they didn’t notice we were there Richmond Park Academy! This is where we were going to see him! We were late so we got to sit in the front! Yay! Michael Rosen was really funny. He talked about his family and more about his Dad and brother. He told us where he got his ideas and how he became a writer.

After the amazing show we all got our books signed, there was a ginormous queue to get it signed. Richmond Academy came round with biscuits and drinks so the queue went quickly.

It was soon all over so we jumped back in the minibus and went back to school. On the way back everyone was so excited about their signatures there was even more talking than on the way there! When we got back to school everyone was so excited about telling their friends about the trip!

Swarms of children took the lead characteristically defying the advice to start slow – and bombing it to the 1K mark near Teddington gate, where a warm smile and pointed finger right was offered by Marshals Neil and Jo. Next the gruelling Teddington to Hampton Wick stretch that goes on and on and on.   A lack of crowd support at this hidden part enabled a few younger ones to tantrum out of site, whilst some Mums and Dads thought they had hit the “Wall” (haven’t the energy to continue).  But then at Hampton Wick, Marshal Amanda gave them a big dollop of encouragement along with a smile that she usually reserves for opening presents, that boosted resolve and got the pack turning right with a new found spring in their step towards the swings and slides of Hampton Court.

At this exact moment a sausage (pretending to be a Dad) crossed the finish line on 22 minutes and was greeted with cheers and awarded a medal from Mr Butterfield the Head and Jane Way the Deputy.  When asked what class the sausage was in, he quickly moved aside to welcome the fastest winner of the race, Ellen, who crossed the line in an unbelievable 25 minutes!

Back to the main flock that were now jog walking past the swings and slides – “please Mum can we have a quick go”, “maybe after, let’s get to the finish”.  Marshal Catherine met them with a gigantic smile, a big clap and a “well done that way” directing them around the wiggly bit of the course to Hampton Court gate where Marshal Jo gave them a knowing smile and wink that they were almost there and couldn’t possibly fail now – even if their parents were exhausted! 100 metres later, with them looking out for (Marshal) Linda, another uplifting smile and warm words ushered the herd of little and big feet to Marshal Maddy to whip up their fighting spirit for the final 100 metre dash to the finish line. Digging deep the rabble picked up their pace and crossed the finish line at an incredible speed that Teddington’s own Mo Farrah would have been proud of.  Now, with everyone a winner after 5000 emotive metres, the Head David Butterfield, the Deputy Jane Way and the Chair of the CSA Jo Grieve burst into tears of jubilation and awarded the beautiful engraved medals to every finisher, and in doing so realised that they too can’t wait to run it next year!

It took us a while to get out of Fairfax road in the giant double-decker coach due to lack of space. We had three elderly people and two young men help us navigate our way out! Eventually we got there and our first destination was the classroom and 6m entered the kitchens.

We started with some introductions. The two actresses introduced themselves; there was Amy and she was to be our school teacher, and also Natasha, the bad tempered school inspector! We started off with the register and then we got working our bodies, with drill!

Soon after that, we entered the classroom – first impressions were everything! After about 10 minutes in that classroom we all discovered that being in a Victorian school was very, very hard. It surprised most of us that we actually wrote on slates!! The funny thing was that two of our class member (Daisy and Matt) got the dunces hat! -we all laughed at them!

After a short lunch break, we swapped activities. In the kitchens we were taught by a forgetful, but friendly kitchen maid called Lottie, and a fierce House-Keeper called Mrs Mop. And whenever Mrs Wilber entered the room the girls had to curtsey and the boys had to bow.

In the end, Freya got employed as a Kitchen Maid and Harry as a Footman – they were both pleased with their new jobs! All in all, it was a great day. I am sure that our upcoming Year 6s will love it too!

Over the day we participated in many activities.  We made a class poppy where each child was given a petal to draw something important to them that they wanted to remember.  We then put them all together to make our huge class poppy.  Come to the Year 2 base to have a look at all three of them!  We also had the opportunity to try on some real RAF uniforms which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

We then had the chance to walk around the rest of the museum where we watched a video on ‘The Battle of Britain’ and saw a marvellous range of aircrafts and RAF badges.  Once we were back at school the children all received a goody bag with RAF treats inside!  We had such a fun and exciting day!

The cakes were tasted by ‘official tasters’ and the winners were as follows:

The overall winner was Lara – well done!

A big thank you to Kathryn Doley and Nicola Whiteside for leading orchestra rehearsals.  And thank you to all staff involved with the trip for their support on the day, and to all parents for their enthusiasm and support for this event.
